4.1 Properties



Vocabulary


Inorganic: The mineral cannot arise from materials that were once party of a living thing.
Crystal: The repeating pattern of a mineral's particles forms a solid.
Element- a substance composed of a single kind of atom.
Luster- the term used to describe how a mineral reflects light from it's surface.
Mohs hardness scale- scale that ranks 10 minerals from softest to hardest.
Streak- Of a mineral is the color of it powder.
Cleavage- a mineral that splits easily along flat surfaces that has the property.
Fracture- describes how a mineral looks when it breaks apart in a irregular way.
Fluroscence- minerals that glow under violet light that has the property.
